Propane tank exchange near you

13,421 places swap an empty 20 lb tank for a full one, at grocery stores, hardware stores, gas stations and farm stores. Search a ZIP to sort them by distance; the exchange filter is already on.

Blue Rhino's public retailer list covers about 6,961 of the 50,000-plus stores it serves, so this map is incomplete for exchange. If your usual store is missing, report it. For a complete chain list, use Blue Rhino's locator or AmeriGas's locator.

The map loads when you search or ask for it, so the page stays fast.

    Common questions

How much propane is in an exchange tank?

Most exchange programs fill a 20 lb cylinder to about 15 lb (roughly 3.5 gallons) and say so on the sleeve. A refill station fills the same tank to 20 lb, about 4.7 gallons. Per pound of propane, a refill is usually the better price; the exchange buys you a tank that has been inspected and recertified.

Can I exchange an expired or rusty tank?

Yes. Exchange programs take tanks past their 12-year stamp date and tanks with surface rust, as long as the valve is a standard OPD type and the tank is a common grill size. That is the main reason to exchange instead of refill when your tank has expired.

    Where are exchange cages?

The 13,421 exchange points listed here come from Blue Rhino's retailer list (6,961 locations, which Blue Rhino says is a fraction of its network), from Tractor Supply stores (2,480), and from Home Depot and Walmart store lists (3,402), both of which stock exchange tanks chain-wide. AmeriGas cages at grocery and hardware stores are not in any public dataset yet; check AmeriGas's own locator for those.

Do I need to bring an empty tank?

No. You can buy a filled exchange tank outright for a higher price, then swap it at the exchange price from then on. Bring the empty tank inside or to the register; a clerk unlocks the cage.
